If i may sound a bit harsh here, please forgive me, but going on the pics it appears you have removed lower branches from the main leader that has split away.

In my opinion, removing these brances was not totally correct.

The end loading should have been removed, ie in the higher canopy to reduce the leverage.

Just my obs.

cheers this beast is on the corner of a land mark roundabout in the public eye etc

just want to tick all the boxes

dont want to go all gunho and then get done over by local LA

but you all know what these trees are like was thinking of removing this big upright limb and then reducing weight on opposite side ? but still theres going to be problems in future with major heart rot etc the trees got to be 100 -150 years old maybe we should call time

Cedar is fairly durable perservering wood, like i said my observation has been that they can withstand large pruning cuts/failures it will shorten the trees safe usefull life expectancy but you may be able to keep it a few more years, its still your call.

What ever you choose to do, unless your completely wrong i doubt the council would do you over, take photgraphic eveidence maybe even keep the failed section.

And yes it does make great firewood.

If that crack is opening like you say it dont look good mate.

If you are hapy you made it safe for now, leave it till the TO is back next week, ring him and let him make the decision.

If he says its safe or recommends bracing etc, the nuce(sp) is round his neck:thumbup:
