Best tree height measuring tool

Question to the OP - what are you trying to do? Is accuracy an issue or are you just looking for approximations?

 

I have information on several systems/techniques that may be of use depending on your needs.

Nikon Forest Pro, pretty good for height but useless for measuring distance/canopy spreads below 10m.

Is that the D810 touch Paul?

 

I tried one, all looked fantastic in the brochure and in the show room. I bought it, got it home, gave it a bit of a workout and found that it was actually too good (I mean too accurate / precise / sensitive)

 

Great features, diameter, measure from picture all that sort of stuff but when I got out in the woods with it I found ivy, moving branches, irregularities of nature were just too 'clumsy' for the incredibly accurate tool that was the D810.

 

Maybe I was hasty in giving up on it but I was keen to get it back to the dealer as soon as possible so as not to lose the opportunity to return it. Too pricey to just have it sitting around gathering dust.

My Lecia disto is not the touch screen one. I don't have any experience of that one I'm afraid. Although I had a similar experience to you when I first got mine. I just couldn't get it to measure properly, it kept on coming up with error messages. When I Spoke with the distributor they advised me to use a tripod. That obviously wasn't going to happen, so I persevered. I'm glad I did because I seem to have got it to work fine just by holding it.

Is this the one that gives you heights on one side of the vertical line, and distances from the tree in 5m increments on the other?

 

I know someone who would probably buy that.
