I enjoyed Ancient Trees: Trees That Live for a Thousand Years for a bit of light reading.

 

I got James Urbans 'Up By The Roots' from a guy in Texas for about £25

On a recent family holiday in the borders, got this in a bookshop in Moffat for £6.

 

Published in 1923, lead author Dalliore of Kew, an absolute welth of information about just about every conifer, and certainly evey one that was known in the world back then. Includes info I heven't seen anywhere else.

 

When it says 'handbook' you'd need hands like shovels to carry this hefty tome around.

Why was nobody selling it for an absurdly low price when I wanted it...?!

I just love the internet, I searched for this, ordered it (around £8.00) and it came yesterday.

Also got recommended Peterken's 'Woodland Conservation and Management' in class yesterday. Whilst the discussion ensued, I managed to find a copy, order it and pay for it. £8,50 - including shipping from the USA:biggrin:

Nabbed 'Decay of timber and its prevention' for five quid. Great score, tbh. Wonderful book! Reading the bit on F. fomentarius and it's darn intricate.

Is that from the early twentieth century? Can't remember the authors names off hand, but if it's the one I think it is it's a great book- particularly for its age.

My edition is from 1958. Authors are Cartwright and Findlay.

 

Reading through it now and it's stellar. Genuinely. Some of the Latin names are outdated, such as P. pomaceus (named as F. pomaceus back then), though it's a cracker of a research book. For £5 it was a bargain.

That's the one, although I thought it was earlier than that. Good book, particularly considering its age.
