Have a look at the RD 400 which is a Radio Detection machine, but a bit more advanced as it has a depth gauge on it. With all these detectors the best way to use them is using the Genny with a direct connection.

All the utility companies employ a plant protection team who will come out to site and advise you on the location of their plant. They supply drawings and there normally guys who have been on the "tools" and now have HAVS or some other ailment which means they can't dig, but their local knowledge of where the services run to and from are a valuable resource you should use.

The main thing is if you get a detector learn how to use it properly in all modes and don,t wear steel toe caps when you use it. The only other thing I would say is make sure you have one which is orange and not yellow as the MOD use a frequency which is close to that of the yellow machine.

Happy hunting!

Oh I would be long gone by the time the street lights came on:laugh1:

In all seriousness that is a good point though- but im no sure how you can use a genny with a non hollow pipe like a street light as you can't put the lead up through the pipe?

TBH even if it could detect electrics and BT lines I would consider it money well spent.

clip the lead from inside the genny onto the lamppost it will put a pulse through the cable or open the hatch on the side and clip it to the armour on the cable sit the genny on the ground directly over a known place for the cable dig for it if you have to just dont have the genny to close to where you are searching in fact without useing a "sond" a separate battery operated thingy that you push up a pipe with drainrods and follow it as it is pushed through no part of a genny goes up a pipe

all the above will work on electric street light and telecom cables the sond ok for tracing drains or a water pipe that is "open"

some of the newer tape laid above a gas or water pipe has a thin wire running through it to attach the genny to
