Why are all these crack willows cracking? Also what's with the discoloration?

Pretty much all of the logs off of about 20 crack willows have a fresh crack in their center. The crack occurs before it gets dropped onto the floor but it is obviously fresh. I initially thought that it would occur in leaning trees due to the release of tension/compression, but it also occurs in straight ones.... These are 30cm to 60cm in diameter logs.

Also... The heartwood (false heartwood?) stains are not consistent with growth periods or rings. Is this common? The stain rings seem to go in and out of the growth rings.
