Wire fence strainers

Hi

I have got a fencing job to do and the top wire is plain. I have usually used barb on the top which I can strain tight and staple behind the barb on the strainer to keep it tight.

I think it might be time to invest in a set of monkey type strainers. I plan on tying the wire off on the strainers and using the monkey type strainers to tension then join with a gripple. Most lengths of the fence are only between 50- 70m long, would a gripple tension up 50m length of plain wire with just the gripple tool?

The monkey type strainers I am looking at are http://http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Chain-Strainer-Monkey-Cattle-Fence-Stretcher-Tensioner-Repair-Pull-Fence-/141160472509

Has anyone used these or am I better off buying a more expensive set?

Thanks in advance.

gripple will easily strain 50meters of plain wire- just pull as much slack through by hand then use the gripple gun to tweak it up tight.

I use the Hayes wire strainers which last for ever pretty much - standard contractors tool. Not sure on cheaper ones as I have never used them- sure they would be fine for occasional use.

You will be fine with a gripple and gripple tool, you can tension 200m easy like this, just cut wire in the middle, put a gripple in, tie both ends and tension with the tool. I would then leave enough wire sticking out so you can re tension in future if needed. If you are doing long stretches then you could use a jumbo gripple over a plus. Monkey strainers are a must if your are fencing all the time but in this situation I would and do use gripples as described

Have to go against consensus here, always found problems with gripples, they never seem to go quite tight enough IMO,

Tie off both ends to the strainers, cut the line in the middle, use your monkey strainers, join with a crimp and crimp tool.:thumbup1:

i agree with you crimps hold much better but for the occasional fencer the crimp pliers are £150 which is not a fortune i know but for a tool which will be sat in the shed most of the time, you would have to do alot of crimping to justify them IMO

Might treat myself to a set of Hayes as hopefully going to be doing more work. Can they be used with barb wire as well as plain?

When you strain up with the monkey type strainers do you just tie off the ends and it keeps tight or crimp or gripples.

Cheers

You can get special barb wire crimp sleeves which I believe work with the regular tool, just on a different notch in the jaws.

Just tie off on the ends, with a high tensile knot if needed, (there are plenty of videos on youtube to show how, its really simple)

yes the barb wire crimps work on the standard tool just with a bigger notch
