Had the same on our A540 . Some times it would crank and start some times nothing . Because it was an intermittent fault we lived with it for a while . It turns out that the big fat lead to the battery was a bit flaky . I used to get underneath and waggle it about until it worked . Lazy buggers ! . New lead and terminal sorted .

I had a chipper not so long ago which had a loose battery terminal !

Resulted in 2 relays 4 link wires and 10 wire connector all melted !!

Electrical shorts cause ( terminal bad connections) power spikes and large power(voltage) increases causing overloading and over heating hence wire insulation melting and fuse blowing

Bad battery terminal are best not left as increased damage can be caused!

All sorted, thanks again for the advice and possible causes. Believe it or not this chipper had been at an approved Jensen service centre for over a week without any luck on finding the starting issue so i pulled it out and i still ended up having to pay £40 for labour? Anyway my dad came over this morning and no word of a lie, within 20 mins had traced the fault to a corroded cable midway between ignition and starter!!! A pain to get to but a simple repair, phew. Thanks again for all the advice. Dad, if you're reading this, you're a star, cheers!
