I shudder to think of the trees we put on the fire, butts 2-3ft diameter because they didn't like it as firewood. They grow like weeds here in surrey, they were planted on the north side of the walled garden for shelter. I grow hundreds from seed to plant in windbreaks.

Wow, Sounds like it likes much of the south then, not just Devon!

 

Not like it as firewood? Why? It one of my favourite firewoods!

yep, twas just a wee one when i got me mits on it. i was staggered as to just how fast it had grown as it was only 15-20 years old for 6-7" diameter.

 

the wood is smooth as silk...

 

 

the hornbeam has not moved as yet but i will be getting it out soon to chop it in to it's component parts and store it in my dry shed.
