I do a few logs for myself and other people but its not my occupation ,my main concern is how do you match engine power and pump pressure also splitting force . I split all sorts of wood from fallen trees to arb waste . Thanks

Ohh! where to start?

The engine, pump, cylinder, and axe-head are all related.

Engine size denotes pump size as in L/min or gal /min.

Pump size denotes ram size as in speed. The bigger the ram the more fluid it takes to fill so a small pump will be slow, a big pump will need hp to drive.

Secondary to that a big ram with a large diameter will deliver high tonnage.

high tonnage allows for a bigger axe head or even a multi axe.

So where do you start ........if you go for a high ton ram then it need to be a very substantial construction. do you want it to be horizontal or vertical?

I have built a few one of which is on the logsplitter thread. My latest creation I haven't displayed here yet.

Just starting to get things together for my log splitter project I have two different rams at my disposal but how do I work out the splitting force of a ram ?

pressure x area

Basically the bigger the ram the bigger the tonnage in simpleton terms. (as breezeblock say)

Measure the chrome ram diameter and you can get a rough idea from there of what you need for a sensible cycle time.

pressure gauge on the outlet marked a or b on the valve block or teed into p and blank off a & b go for a 6000 psi gauge to be on the safe side I've blown apart a few gauges and its not nice you can get a gauge from flow tech on ebay for about £7-8 and a few quid for adaptors
