The detail on the maps is every bit as good as a paper one, and it will give you your location automatically, even in thick fog or if you can't read a map. If your phone is in a case then it can get wet unlike the paper map, I used to have paper maps in the car, they all got wrecked eventually..

To but paper maps co cover the area that I have in my phone would be very expensive...

Just get a real OS map.

Relying on a tiny screen and a device with a limited battery life in emergency situations sounds like a bad combo. Never felt like I couldn't justify the weight and size of a couple of 1:25k OS maps in my pack/van. Although last time I gave a colleague an os map, to find a location we were driving to, he just shrugged and said he didn't know how to use it!! :confused1::001_rolleyes:

I have the maps on my iPad and also iPhone which has backup battery on it so that's not an issue, I don't use them for emergency use anyway but for looking forestry jobs. As Tom says buying lots of paper maps is expensive and there's enough clutter in van without adding piles of maps!

Don't know if it's very similar but i bought UK MAP app for around £10-£15.

You just download (for free) the areas you want in more detail.
