Instant hedge

I like native hedges but if you want a 'screen' within a few seasons cypress are the way to go in my opinion. A site I worked on has a freshly planted row of 3m thuja's at about 1.5m spaced along a single row. Inside a year they had formed a pretty uniformed screen and the provide the privacy/noise reduction the neighbours wanted. Obviously there is ongoing maintenance but could be the way to go.

Thanks all. The road hedge is already native and I plan to lay and restore this but it's not going to stop anyone for a good few years.

I was going to fence about 6 foot inside this and put in some kind of barrier in between. All the suggestions look good. I do want a bit of a noise screen as well but hearing a couple cockerels over a hedge you can't see through is different to seeing neatly laid out pens of rare breed chickens ready to pinch.

get yourself blackthorn, hawthorn purging buckthorn mix can get 90to 120cm whips plant 6 to mtr staggard rows. this will give you a instant nasty hedge.

do not say whereabouts you are murrey mcclean abingdon mill tree farms winchester. give them a couple of seasons and your have a thick hedge.

just give it a trim top and sides after first year to make it grow out sideways not go up wards. onc that hedge is there lay your roadside hedge to make two barriers. no one likes trying to get over any thorn and if they do put something over blackthorn will go through chainsaw trousers so a hessian sack is no barrier. and it will also stop reynard coming for his tea
