Arb waste is surely the same as logs, it's part of the tree, it's otherwise left on the ground to rot away, why not utilise this waste of material as fuel, in actual fact, brash wood is more of a biomass than the logs themselves, if this doesn't happen then too much good quality logs suitable for the mills will get burnt, in turn sending timber prices through the roof, i have a harvesting business and see it already, majority of work just now is clear felling areas of perfectly good timber, chipping the whole lot and burning it

I'm with you in this mate exactly what I would do.

 

A good friend has an installation from Glen farrow going ahead at the end of the month. The contract states that if you can't get the RHI they will refund in full not ideal but at least you know your not going to loose.

 

Of course you going to loose. Its only a refund your still stuck with the Glenn Farrow boiler which will need to be replaced with a more compliant boiler in order to get the RHI. If you stick with Glenn Farrow then although the boiler has cost you nothing you still need to fuel it although if your not claiming RHI it can be all the rubbish and offcuts without any restriction on moisture content. To be honest I would go for the free boiler option as burning my waste wood is far better than burning wood that I could sell to a customer.

But the problem you have is the Glen Farrow is only approved for RHI purposes if this waste wood is VERY dry specifically in the range 14-18% MC and with no more than 5% contaminant level. So if your target to dry logs is 20% MC there is little point drying beyond that down to 18% just so that you have fuel for the next batch. If instead you use mixed logs rather than waste then the moisture content increases to 17-23 % Which means part of your batch of logs which could have been sold to your customers is now used to dry the next batch of logs.

They them selfs have a contract as I understand it that states the customer will not be out of pocket. They will take back equipment & refund not ideal as no income from RHI. The guy in question will have had the contract scrutinised so it's got to be a winner for him.

But I know of 6 glen farrows all within a 15 mile radius of ourselves all going great and bringing great RHI returns, it only needs to pass the emission rules present at the time of commissioning, then its all set for 20 years?

Not wishing to by the bearer of bad tidings, but it can be said with some certainty that it is only a matter of time before annual audits are the norm.
