Just curious, exactly what are you wanting the weed barrier material for?. At least over here Stateside I find the concept of weed barrier to be a money making joke since the weed seeds germinate on top of any fabric or material used to prevent germination from below the fabric. I have found that using a pre-emergent herbicide just before laying of mulch or pine straw works best and generally at a depth of 3" seems best. Follow up treatments of post-emergent herbicide maintains the beds going forward.

Only lasts "up to" 16 weeks though. Would that be long enough?

Yes, up to 4 months is fine.... just need to block the light for long enough so that it buys us time to sort out the layers of top mulch.

As above, we need the weed barrier to block light (and then rot away).... very similar to using cardboard.

It sounds like you are trying for total weed eradication (by chemical warfare) whereas we are quite happy to have a controllable amount of 'weed' for the critters to live on.

Thus we don't have to resort to using any chemicals.

It's no joke... it does work. Just ask the billions of critters that live on our farm!

I now understand. The critters have more than enough to eat both dead and alive with a year round growing climate. The use of pre and post emergent herbicides is common place and when used correctly provides the desired results at a minimal cost under IPM guidelines.

I believe when it comes to pesticides, (monsanto, Syngenta, roundup, etc) guidelines are worthless, at least when applied to habitat. Cheers, Steve
