Thinking slightly outside the box (I should probably get back in it!) is the material too tough for a rotavator? It's only bamboo; I'd have thought a mid-sized one would handle it.

I've always found an old axe is best, to slice it into lumps that can be eased out with a good strong trenching spade. Sharper the better.

Just to update this and thank all for information offered. Job has been to-ing and fro-ing for the last while, as access is an issue but got the go ahead last week, we hired a Dosko 6 Hp stump grinder and it did a great job, just as well we went with the grinder as there was weed barrier buried which was covered with years of leaves and mulch which the grinder handled as well. being a manual machine was a bit of a pain but job is done and invoice has been tendered :biggrin:
