Yes it's a Purple emperor.

and it was in oak woodland.

Had one fly into the tractor cab last year but no camera that time.

they come down from the tree tops in the morning looking for salt. this one found some on my hand

That's one I would love to see. I used to read BB's accounts of them in his wood in Northants. He used to collect the eggs from the sallow leaves and raise them to maturity before release.

 

I remember BB writing in Shooting Times, lovely old guy, made cages from fabric and rised them on sallows if I remember correctly.....had a few of his books .... Those guys seem to have disappeared now --proper country gent

Beautiful writer. Yes he contributed to Shooting Times along with another good 'un...Fred J Taylor a proper countryman.
