Heterobasidion?

Saw this tree today, it's dying, it had a neighbour which died a few years ago. It had been diagnosed as honey fungus, but the mycelium is white and sheet like. No bootlaces.

How far up the trunk does the mycelium go Tom?

 

Heterobasidion is mainly a root/basal decay but can invade and spread into the stem (Butin)

 

Not sure I would rule out Armilaria completely.

 

 

No fruitbodies at all at the base of the stem?

as david says, and that mycelium IS Armillaria, probably ostoyea.

 

it has been correctly identified and bootlaces are not always present, bootlaces are only needed for travel or extreme conditions

Thanks guys, I hadn't ruled out armilaria, I just had a similar case with heterobasidion a few years back which made me wonder. It has quite a mushroomy smell, there are no fruiting bodies.

always remember that fruiting bodies is JUST SEX and nothing more, it requires two sexualy compatible myceliums to meet.
