Bio security at the Arb show?

Hello Paul

Apologies but I didn't get the chance to say hello today, you were obviously a very busy man as were the rest of your colleagues.

Fine show (weather certainly helped :thumbup1:) food and beverages were certainly a vast improvement on past shows, well done to who ever sourced that, though a tad miffed as Karen managed to get the last pork & stuffing roll as she was ahead of me in the queue :biggrin:

No doubt there will be enough threads/posts agreeing with how well the show was put together and rightly so :thumbup1:

However, one thing struck me today when I first arrived and then whilst walking around the show..........where was the dissemination of information on bio security within the industry. Here was an event that was inviting tree workers from all over the country to gather (like the clan gatherings of yore) bringing with them their lust for new shinny things and knowledge and also perhaps bringing with them spore and other nasties clinging on and hitching a lift to find transit to pastures new (things like Phytophora, Chalara, Massaria, OPM etc....) ???

Perhaps some posters at the gate, or a specific tent or demonstration or other PR.........I dunno, haven't given it much thought tbh

Just think it was a missed opportunity

Maybe there was and I just missed it?

No hurry for a reply, you're obviously busy and will then be on a beach someplace having a few jars for the next month or so recovering

Regards

David

Morning David, the apologies are mine that I wasn't available, sorry to have missed you (and indeed anyone else who I said to "pop over and have a chat".) A combination of presentations about the ARB Approved Contractor Scheme, and then subsequent, and relentless, conversations about the same, interestingly this year with many existing ArbACs, tied me up all day :blushing:

On your 'bio-security' question, I know that Simon did discuss it with the estate and Lord Bathurst, and hence I can only imagine either they deemed the risk to be 'low' or, as with several other proposals along the way, they said 'no.' I will endeavour to find out more and let you know.

In terms of anyone disseminating information about such, I'm sure the commission were invited, principally to talk / display info about the various P&D ravaging at the moment, but I note they weren't there, but again not sure why.

Sorry to leave so many questions unanswered but I will get back to you when I can.

Best regards and have a good day (looks like we''il be having a very soggy one so you chose well coming along yesterday!:thumbup1:)

Paul

PS I'll have words with Karen about her "inconsiderations" to here guest in securing the last pork roll

Blimey, that's an early start !

I'd of made the most of a comfy bed and and a slow start to the day if I were you

Thanks for getting back so soon, look forward to reading back further thoughts when time is less pressed.

Have a great day :thumbup1:

Morning David, thanks for your good wishes throughout for the show. The general consensus is that it was a great success, even the rain yesterday wasn't as bad as forecasted...no surprise there:biggrin:

Apparently bio-security was discussed with the estate, albeit a little late in the day, and the decision was made not to implement anything due to the logistical challenges of doing so and the fact that any control it offered would probably be low in effectiveness anyway. There was also a view that any contractors etc. who visited that show that have bee working in 'infected' areas should have their own specific controls measures in place.

I think the reality is that the effectiveness of bio-security measures outside of controlled zones and, for instances, tree/shrub nurseries, is questionable given the practicalities of doing so. Nonetheless form an educational and information point of view it would have been nice to have the FC / FERA etc. present at the show. I will feed this back.

Thanks for your observations and have a nice 'rest of' weekend, :thumbup1:

Thanks Paul, off to the beech with friends and family, should be a good one

Again, great show. I know you wouldn't have seen my comment as being negative, rather observational. If I don't say something soon after, things have a habit of sliding in to the distant vague memory.

Have yourself a great relaxing rest of the weekend :thumbup1:
