Like Mark I would think if your creating enough force to bend a spring putting a solid post through will cause that to lever in the tank thread and if you damage that thread future repairs could be difficult.

 

Stubby's repair seems the best soloution.

You have to engineer some kind of restriction to the two parts of the saw going in opposite directions . If you don't not only do you get a bent spring but eventually the impulse pipe will tear or just plain pull right off . I am sure this is the reason for some of the bad running problems . Small perforations in the pipe caused by it stretching when the saw is dropped on its strop . Just thought I would add that bit as its to do with the saw .
