pruning macrocarpas??

any tips on thinning and reducing and making safe against future strong winds??

before and after photos would be nice too.

done quiet a few but am keen to improve my techniques etc.

difficult... maybe take some end weight off the tips and lightly thin the remainder of the foliage on the branch with silky/secateurs. just a deadwood will usually reduce the sail area a fair bit, but often leaves you with tip heavy limbs.

 

the only way to really windproof a mature mac is with three cuts at ankle level tho, shedding limbs big and small is just how they deal with wind

thanks, the boss tends to go for thinning, but i think this can lead to the remaining limbs twisting more and cracking??

so the to reduce the long leaders is slow and awkward( for me anyhow) and then often looks a bit odd.

just asking this as a lot of these trees have been hit bad here with the last mega wind.

yeah i only try and 'prune' macs if the client really twists my arm. most of my mac work is tidying up shattered limbs and tops after the fact, or removal after major failure. i see quite a few, i like em, even the odd shaped broken ones.

pruning the tips to reduce end weight thats as about as far as i'd go........ there quite popular in cornwall second least favourite tree next to leylandii to work on
