This summer will see an ambitious project to attempt to record the canopy across London

The Goverments Forestry & Woodlands Policy states the need to inventorize the citys trees to show them as a connected resource.

from section 6: Improving Our Valuable Woodland Assets...........

It is vital that we have accurate, up-to-date information about the size, distribution, composition and condition of our woodlands. The current National Forest Inventory, which will be completed in 2014, will provide a record of key information about our forests and woodlands. This information will be useful for everyone involved in forestry and land management, planning, policy and business. Such high quality and reliable information is particularly important for business investment.

This survey will take on board both privately owned trees and those within the management of the local authorites.

Obviously it would be too big a task to plot every single tree,

so there are 650 recording plots across the whole of the inner & outer parts of the capital.

The plots measure 11m in radius

The info to be recorded will consist of:

land use (for example, cemetary, residential, street etc....)

Number of trees

Canopy percentage

Canopy die back

Ground cover (for example, cement, grass, water etc....)

Percentage of sunshine on the trees

The above are just a few of the categories

The project is looking for around 200 volunteers to create 66 three person teams.

There is a need for each of the teams to have a designated team leader who would get training in May

The volunteers would ideally be made up of Tree wardens, Arborists, Tree Officers, Students etc....

The surveying will take place over four days this summer & its hoped that each of the teams could do 3 plots a day.

So, if anyone is interested please get in touch with Jim Smith who is the National Urban Forestry Adviser, at......

[email protected]

You would need to supply the following information....

A name, contact phone number, e-mail address and the postcodes you would like to operate in or be a "Londonwide" volunteer

Thanks for reading

Indeed, I'm guessing you will be having some involvement. What areas will you be covering?

I don't know yet.

I should be able to offer up three or four days with my own leave & a day or two of corporate volunteering hopefully.

Would be more efficient to do areas I already know I guess, but also a good opportunity to get know other parts of the capital and their specific treescapes.
