Massey Ferguson 50B Digger

It's got a random leaver for the back actor that could be what it's for. It's also got another random leaver in the floor by the drivers seat. Was told it maybe a overdrive but makes little difference to speed.

I've not totally fathomed the gears yet its loosing alot of hydraulic oil from the ram which I think upsets the torque converter and looses power. It runs lovely when full, but soon empties it. just need to pluck up the courage to remove the ram

The torque is highly unlikely to be running off the hydraulics, certainly not the case on anything else as it's always ATF in them.

 

Torques are always sluggish when cold and until you're used to their characteristics you would think there was something wrong, get it well warmed before trying to ascertain it's condition.

 

50B was an excellent digger in it's day, probably ahead of JCB during the 70's and early 80's, took the 3CX for them to catch up. Parts price (if required) likely to be the main issue.

We had a JCB ram reconditioned by a company in Wellingborough a few yrs ago, it needed some new pipe welding on the cylinder and I didn't want to risk warping the cylinder (it was off a spud leg dredger, got worn in the leg tube) got the cylinder done and seals, it was £140 if memory serves.

 

Is there another machine/forklift/A frame about to take the weight of the ram while you detach it? It'd be a hell of a lot easier so you can knock the pins out with gusto without worrying about supporting it :D

 

I reckon you could tap into the hydraulics without the extra valves, just add male and female bayonet fittings into both the feed & return of the easiest ram to get to, uncouple as and when you need to use the splitter (put the males on the ram side of circuit) then have the control valve on the splitter, that one you saw me using was only £450 with the valve included. You could probably make a frame so the splitter can be swapped onto the back actor instead of a bucket, look out for a cheap bucket you can butcher up for the pin fittings.

Cheers everyone, there's a fork lift I could possibly use, might by a splitter like yours pete.

 

I thought the torque converter would be separate it just does't like to go fast with no hyd oil in. Loaded a few trannie loads up today and it sure was quicker than shoveling by hand my boy took some pics

I have got a 50B on our farm and have spent a lot of time getting it running correctly.

 

Have you got 2 levers on the rear hydraulic control for the back digger arm? If you have the small lever on the extreme right is for the two small rams that lock the rear digger carriage in place push up to un lock then use the arm at 90 degrees to the machine to move the carriage across the back of the machine. Do not forget to re lock the carriage, I did not on one occasion, oop's.

 

Have a look through the front of the grill in front of the radiator there is the hydraulic pump powered by a universal shaft from the front of the engine.

 

The hydraulic tank is in the upright column on the left hand side of the front bucket frame. Top up with 46 hydraulic oil it runs better on that. The hydraulic oil filter is under a removable floor plate in the cab on the left hand side. To change the filter you need to drain some of the oil in the tank. If you look under the tank in the frame on the left hand side there is a 2 part plug. The small inner one drains enough oil for a filter change the larger drains the tank completely. I drained the tank on mine and got 10 litres of complete gunk out it now runs much better.
