Thanks everyone and welcome Niall... your description of habitat could not be more accurate. This is a mixed broadleaf woodland just outside Stourbridge West Midlands. Found underside of a pile of Silver Birch / Sycamore felled approx. 24 months ago with heavy fallen leaf cover and bramble thicket - hence warm I presume?

I will post some more pictures of this and others when I can as today we were forced to retreat by some quite scary thunder and lightening.

We are a little concerned ... this was a reserve firewood pile ... have we disturbed something rare ??

Thanks, I wouldn't think so you can find it all over world if the conditions are right.
