Well done tree-diver, couldnt think of all of it off the top of my head. As Skyhuck says, its unfortunately not as straight forward as we'd all like, but its a fairly comprehensive explanation of self-employment. As the HMRC like to see it, and being as they are gradually clamping down on self-employment throughout all trades, its best to make sure you can show that you are truly self-employed, subbing out to one company, saying you are self-employed is not enough. If HMRC check up on the company, and believe that a subby in reality should be employed, then that company can be responsible to pay tax and NI for him, at some considerable cost.

Yup, and i know of one local tree company currently under investigation for this very thing.

here your allowed to work for a company full time for three months of the year any longer than that and your deemed employed. many companies seem to break their companys down into sections, for legality safety reasons. so you just invoice different sections, allowing you to work longer than the three month long stipulation
