Dark exudate from Oak

Like the title says, looked at an oak last week, beaut of a tree, but as I walked away i noticed a slight drop in vigour of the crown on one side (I mean really slight) few small bits of dead and it had dropped a branch from this same sides in the high winds (could be coincidence) then I noticed this on the limb that the side with the less vigour grew from (hope that makes some sort of sense)

Any ideas/ theories?

Perhaps that side is not so thrifty because the food once made from that big limb is no more. Add increased heat etc. from exposure, plus root death in response to branch loss, , plus the need to grow scar tissue, and that's bound to be bad for the tree.

Trees are often hurt by 'collar cuts'.

The leaking seems of little consequence; would a scrub and a rinse be good?

Stem bleeding cankers can be caused by a few Phytophthora; It can also be a symptom of Acute Oak decline;

It can also be caused by sap leaking from underoccluded sites of severance.

aka nothing special. Yes indeedy worth a return check. :thumbup1:

And perhaps scrub and rinse, to get a baseline for observations. :001_smile:

This I think is what the issue is, but we will keep check on it.
