What criteria do you use to access whether a Larch is timber quality

Recommended Posts

Im trying to understnad what makes a timber quality Larch tree

DBH around 40cm

TD from 15cm upto around 40cm

&

Straight.

How straight to they have to be. Dead straight, or are is the odd kink allowed

for example some of the trees I have, have flaws around 18m up.

At what height are forks ok ?

Cheers

eurof spec is 18 minimum top u/b for a 3.7 sawlog; used to be 1" deviation per metre but not so sure about that anymore and ample knots are a no. Had a heap of logs last year; firewooded the lot in the end as they were borderline rough and mill rejection was not an option!

3.7m log 18cm+ tdub

4.9m log 18cm+ tdub

4.9m log 30cm+ tdub

7.4m log 30cm+ tdub

25mm per 1m of deviation from straight . No double bends no knots >25mm and no rot or pockets of rot.

Remember it's not just saw logs in a tree there is pulp, chip, pallet, shavers, fencing. All can come out of the tree you just need to have someone who wants it and in a quantity that they want it.

If in doubt cut to the next spec down as the last thing you want is the expense of a rejected load:blushing:
