If you chase the branches effected back there from 1 trunk.

If you scratch the bark with your nail it's still green and alive at the moment.

Any leaves below are regularly blown out and collected and there is no sign of and fungus at the base yet.

That is helpful to know. It certainly rules out phantom barbecuers. And most environmental causes except insofar as Pat Ferrett has said individuals of the same species can cope very variably with stresses like drought.

It also is only really on the on the south side of the hedge except for one. But in all cases the other side to the effect part is still green?

Are next years buds quietly lurking at the tips? This would be good news because along with live stems it may recover next year.

Around me, those with conifer hedges particularly of the Macracarpa type, have very large patches of die-back. This was due to the drought in the summer here. I'm watching with interest to see if they come back to life from the main stem.

Back to your beech hedge, I've never seen this on such a scale, except where squirrels have ring-barked young trees, not a hedging plant!

Pat Ferret may well be right with the sun scorch!

we have found the same at two jobs, customer said it started near the base of hedge and then expanded up in an ever increasing circle. leaves died, but stems and buds still green. photo is after we cut hedge last week, does not seem specific to individual plants, has spread as if it was all one plant. top of hedge still green as are the sides and top either way. sorry the photo not great!
