Just wondering if there's and other options, has anyone used a satellite connection?

Sick of paying BT for a slow connection and paying the same as someone in town on 20 times the speed!

Haven't used satellite broadband but currently looking into it as best speed I can currently get is around 1.5mbps and fibre is looking less and less likely to come here.

There seem to be 3 providers in the uk but several resellers of each provider. Set up is expensive but cost varies depending on whether you buy or rent the dish and modem and whether you DIY install or get someone to do it. I've been looking at it and DIY install seems feasible but aligning the dish looks time consuming.

Haven't used them myself but this site seems to offer all three providers and some useful information:

Satellite broadband provides fast internet

If fibre doesn't get here soon I will sign up.

Hi buzz surgeon.

My parents have got satellite broadband , It's got ok speed but I wouldn't say it was spectacular. Not sure of costs but we got it installed on a Scottish government scheme a couple of years ago. U don't think it's the cheapest but better than dial up

Slightly off subject but I've been campaigning for rural broadband improvements here in EA and have managed to get onto BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC TV 6 o'clock News more recently!

I'm not sure if I'll manage to make the slightest bit of difference but I thought it was worth trying. Most people whom I talk to on this subject are fed up with the 'same old, same old' guff that spouts from those in power.

I looked at satellite a few yrs back as my landline only give about 300k, download was faster, but upload still uses the landline, it was cost prohibitive at the time.

I was on a Narrowboat last week, the owner has mobile BB on the EE network via a dongle, he was watching a HD streaming video with no buffering, asked him if it was that good all the time, he said at peak times it can slow down a bit, bit not so you'd notice too much, might be worth looking into.

I have a '3' dongle, i get about 1mbps up and download with 16gb a month for £15.

depends on the signal, best check on their website for 3g coverage map. Luckily we have good 3g despite being in the countryside.
