Hello I have a stihl 051 which has been running great, when I got it I replaced all the usual hoses pick up vacume etc and fitted a new plug and its ran great but I came to use it the other day and it will start up and idel fine but when I come to rev it the revs will build up but then before it hits its full rpm it seems to bog down and the stutter on the odd occasion I have tryed this it has cut out aswell.

Any ideas before I start stripping it your help and advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you

You obviously realise they only rev to around 9k?

Sounds like you may need a carb clean or maybe the plug you've fitted is duff else.

Both can be done pretty quick on these saws, whilst the carb is off just make sure the inlet underneath it is all good, its plastic type but they can split.

Yes, these big old stihls are powerhouses but have a very low rpm range, when I leaned out my 090 all it did was cut out in the cut, they don't scream like a modern saw!

The saw should roar, not sound like a high pitched scream, if you watch some videos of that saw on YouTube, and then aim for a lower pitch than the videos (all to do with microphones here)

Like you say they certainly like to run on the rich side. Max torque hits around 5500rpm so they don't need to scream. You can block off the governor for another 1k or so but its doesn't improve the cut much just the sound.

None of this chainbrake business, lightweightness and zero emissions :001_rolleyes: these saws where made for real men :lol:
