Sad story ... I know of a kid in the UK the same age would not go to school so his dad got him involved in work and he nearly cut his fingers off hse involved and they lost all there council contracts and went under ... I really don't get it though as I grew up in the industry and was never allowed to touch a saw unless under strict supervision and again untill I was 18 and had passed my nptc's.. It many ways it helped me as I had much time to pick up the right and wrong ways of doing things and i firmly believe to be a good tree worker you have to do a long aprentaship before being allowed to cut or climb by your self.

my grandson is outdoors but i have said he will not touch the saws until he is 18 and done his basic tickets. my son in law never used a saw much said he needs to get his basics and learn to use a saw. under supervision. but very sad news RIP

I owned my first chainsaw when I was 13, having used one for a few (don't know how many, it's a while ago...) years previously.

I believe age has not much to do with sense... I've seen a fully qualified tree surgeon use an axe in a way that my five year old daughter never would because she instinctively knows it would hurt her.
