Can anyone a: make out the damage to the bark on this syc from my crap photos, and b: tell me what it might be. There are no fruiting bodies i could see, other sycs of the same size within feet of this one and no visible probs.::confused1:ATTACH]11822[/ATTACH]

ive seen somthing similar to this when a was at college it turned out to be fire damage that happened years back when the estate owners used the area for burning leaf litter a hazzared guess

Had a quick butchers hook through a book today couldn't find anything. Don't think its sooty bark though.

I've seen it quite regularly but not thought much of it before.

Is it an old pollard which has been allowed to grow by any chance?

i Dont think there has ever been any pollarding. The owner said that it is possible that there was a fire,The rest of the tree looks just as it should!?

Hi all,

This is an old post i know but...

I looked at a mature Sycamore the other day where one of the main leaders had the same bark damage as pictures 1&2 above. This leader was in decline with very poor vigour, plenty of dead wood and weak foliage compared to its counterpart which looked fine in comparison.

Does anyone know what has caused this on the bark?
