I made some bases for my arbtalk signs a few years ago, if memory serves I used boiled linseed oil to bring out the colours, then applies yachting varnish over the top which give a shine and smooth finish, looked good and has lasted very well.

some work from today, an Oak table /bench just had two thin coast of boiled linseed applied.

I will dowse it a few more times, then will apply some Danish oil, depending upon its final use
