Tipper pin wear

I notice the tipper body on the Landy was bouncing about a bit today so got a bar in near the pins and checked for wear.

There was about 3/4 of an inch wear in the hinges, how crap is that.

When the body was first fitted I thought the hinges looked a bit crappy, anyway, S_T_S brought his landy round the other week and showed me how he has beefed his up with a large diametre stainless hinge bar and big bosses as hinges.

I've dug out a stainless bar and am going to turn up some new hinge bosses and push fit some phospur bronze bushings into them with grease nipples.

Worth checking your pins chaps.

S_T_S, can you post a piccy of your hinge assembly and I'll post some before and afters of mine.

The back on mine is not that old and is greased regularly :bored:

Dean as promised.

The sections bolted to the chassis has a short length of tube in it to give more surface contact between the hinge pin and frame. The section bolted to the body is supposed to have 2 drop pieces on either side but I ran out of plate during manufacture so have just gone with one for now. The hinge pin is 316 stainless steel @ 2" diameter so won't wear.

Any problems let me know and I will meet you somewhere and you can have a look.

Yes, thats how I remembered them.

I'll take befores this weekend, but they are basically two bolts for hinges with the heads welded to the chassis. The forces pushing down on them when the back is tipped up must be tremendous, just by putting a solid hinge bar right through makes them self supporting and concentrates the load through the chassis without a twisting force

As promised, before and after pics of modified tipper hinge.

The standard hinges really are crappy, just a nut and bolt as a pin with the actual hinge running on the threaded part of the bolt, really cheap crappy job. Because they used bolts instead of a straight through bar, the weight has caused the bolts to bend downwards.

I turned up two new hinge bosses and made them so I could press in two phosphur bronze bushes I had kicking about, then used a stainless steel bar as a hinge pin that goes straight through, finally drill and fit grease nipples.

The back is much more stable now., Welding not as good as it should be because of awkward access and wind and snow :001_smile:
