Weight - m3 to metric tonne - Scots Pine

In theory you can calculate it for anything under a metric tonne per m3.

If you cut a cube or rectangle place it in water and measure how far up the side the water comes (as a percentage of the depth of that side) - ie

1. A 10 inch cube of timber placed in water, sinks down so 8 inches are below the surface.

2. The timber's density is 80% that of fresh water.

3. Water is 1 metric tonne /M3 so the timber is 800 kg per M3

 

The difficulty comes if its really heavy and it sinks - then you need more brain power than I'll ever have.

Easy peasy mate,just saturate the water with salt in solution,weigh a litre of the liquid & use the liquid to run your test!:biggrin:
