Apprenticeship through HCT and looking for employer in South Wales

Hi all,

I've got a conditional place at the Hereford College of Technology but need to find an employer that would be willing to take me on. Starting July or September ideally.

I'm 27, female (!), hard working and practical minded. I have no previous experience but am willing to learn as I want a career change. I love being outdoors and the environment and can't wait to get started in this sector. I know it's going to be hard work, will be out in ALL weather and will have to work from the bottom up.

The course is Forestry & Arboriculture but can include Urban Forestry:-

"In order to fund you through the programme, i.e. all your training and certification costs we are proposing to use Forestry Commission funding provided through their Skills Initiative Fund. In order to qualify for this, you need to have an employer that is either engaged in General Forestry and Woodland Work but this could also include Urban Forestry. In essence this means that you could be employed by a Tree Surgery Company but they would need to guarantee you some work in planting, establishment and maintenance work activities. Realistically this means that you might be able to stay more local to Cardiff rather than long-distance commuting or lodging away."

I've contacted a couple of places that the college recommended but no luck as yet. I've also contacted the Forestry Commission but no luck there either - there's a merger happening in April so may try again for that.

Does anyone have advice or know of anyone that would be willing to train me up. I have a CV already to send. I would love the get the opportunity to be a climber but also interested in the science and environmental side - well until I find what path within this industry suits me. Also any experience with this college?!

I know how helpful you all are so I look forward to hearing any advice, good news or not. Cheers

Hereford Tec is not a bad college. I think Jack (caveman27) was looking at this course.

Have you thought about approaching estates? Places like Eastnor castle, that sort of thing ( don't know any down your way. Sorry)

There's a rec climb on the 20th April if you want to come along.
