Yes thats right - Agricultural exemption.

P.P.E should be available and you should encourage him to wear some.

You're welcome. I agree that the use of PPE is good practice and I always use mine, but so far as your dad is concerned, it's new fangled softy crap, he was probably safely using saws LONG before we decided death was inevitable without a helmet. I wouldn't push it, just let him keep doing it however he always has.....

I would prefer him not to use a chainsaw but it would be a bit of a challenge to actually stop him. As long as the business itself is not putting itself in the line of prosecution i am a lot happier about it.

Yes he has used a saw before, I would say in his year of retirement he quite probably used a saw more than I will in my whole life and I do a fair bit.

Local farmers do the same under the exemption, and get me in to take down tricky trees or less straightforward tasks. I have recommended to them that they don't do lone working, wear ppe (JOhn Deere overalls and a flat cap work best) and have a (dirty handkerchief ) 1st aid kit available on site. Can't seem to get the point across about working from a teleported bucket yet!! :001_rolleyes:

He knows what he's doing then, let him at it, good to keep active doing what you enjoy into retirement anyway I reckon.

To be honest, stopping him will probably be more likely to hurt him than continued chainsaw use. :001_smile:

Some of his work, at 65. (the leylandii, the apple is my job)

He did all of that row and more. Dropped, logged and tidied.

My 6' son in the pic for scale.

I never met a farmer yet who even wares the very basic protection, how they last so long is a mystery but growing up with and respecting deadly tools probably has more impact than all the H&S crap put together. It can be a little over the top and is getting worse, sure its there just to create office jobs ?
