It looks like that figure includes maintenance up until 2035. And I don't think you'd get much of a highway tree for £20.00 these days...

I don't want to leap to the defence of the contractors, as I've seen some real rip-offs, but I suspect this is not quite the way it's being portrayed.

This is a classic example news with a spin what that are failing to explain is that its a loss leader structure fells are done at a loss and planting is profitable and yes it does include maintaining the tree and that not saplings(whips).

That's quite true but it doesn't help matters when they give such a punitive response. I think the only saving grace to me is the long maintenance period, the rest is pure waffle. I would like to know if that is actually included within the 2k for the entire period, they must have a very long contract.

Contract manager Eddie Fellows said: “It cannot be compared to placing a tree in a park. The highway is a hostile environment for a tree.

“Particular species need to be selected, then there are ground works and the impact on utilities to be considered.

“The work is carried out on an active highway, then there are accidents and vandalism.”

He added that the trees are maintained until 2035.

How much would you charge to plant a tree on a highway? bearing in mind:

a) traffic control measures may have to be employed.

b) all staff trained & qualified to meet LA requirements.

c) purchase and storage of material, potentially 1000's of units.
