There's a marine supply shop down the road from me. I have got mallions from them before so will have a look at what they have. I know they have shackles in just not sure what ones. As they had a wall full of them.

As far as I know you have to send the harness off and have the rings fitted. That's what the petzl guy and the last show told me . Correct m if I'm wrong tho

 

That was the same thing we were told here in the States.

I don't get why hey have to be fitted by them. It's in the manual to replace the bridge to undo them and put them back together again. I did when I put a steel core to act as a backup in case the bridge went.

 

IMO they would be a really usefull thing to have.

One thing I would say to go with this, the chainsaw attachments on a harness are designed to break away. If you cobble something together that doesn't break at the intended load, you could be in the brown stuff one day...

This is also true. But the part that went on the harness was the red webbing on the back. Sewn on and the stitching gave way. The saw didn't get snagged on anything and fell a decent height. Just glad the saw has 9 lives as it was a modded one that I done and I really don't want to have to repair it again.

 

It's only for the saw to hang from the harness and not for anything to do with life if you know what I mean. Just a saw on a tool strop. So if there was a need for the saw to break away from the climber the strop would go, wouldn't it?

It should do, as should the attachment ring on the saw and the attachment point on the harness. Its all about redundancy really. You could be in the situation one day where you get a back handle stuck in dropping timber, so you don't have the breakable attachment to the saw. I know people, including myself, who don't always use proper breakaway saw strops, another option lost. Add a back handle and non breakaway strop and you could be reliant on that harness attachment giving way.

The climber always uses the bungee strops. Never uses any other kind.

 

Just what happened on a job this week and got me thinking about other options as the only ring on a motion is right around the back. He said its annoying reaching around for the saw.

Does he always clip it short at the back? I have mine attached in the middle then clip it short on my side for moving about, easy to reach when you want it
