Husqvarna 61 - maintenance query

Thanks Spud, think this is a one piece filter.

Here are the cleaned up bore pics. Anything looking like grit is fluff off the cloth.

Stripped and rebuilt the clutch break, several times as couldn't quite figure the b***h out. Goes on with a nice sharp snap now. Basically the grease and dust had built up to stop the main spring compressing enough, and clogged other bits.

Cleaned out everything inside and out of the casing so just awaiting the new piston.

Back once it arrives.

Jon

Is there a section covering hedge trimmers here?

Got a Kawasaki I need to re-tune.

Looks clean from what I can see - I would re-bevel the exhaust port - especially the top edge as they can get aluminium build up on the edge that can snag a ring or mark the piston.

Diamond files or abrasive paper do this well:thumbup:

Ah! I noticed a bit of roughness there pre treatment. I'll check again, but think it's all clear now.

Wonder if it was that buildup coupled with running hot that caused the problem. Must have been something floating around to wreck the piston like it did.

The main reasons for this sort of damage are bad/old fuel, no oil in the fuel, air leaks and lean carb setting.

The engine runs hot and eventually gets that hot that the exhaust side of the piston starts to soften and actually melt through excessive heat.

The exhaust side of the piston then smears itself all over the cylinder.

Brilliant

Piston arrived this morning, great service there.

Just a quick query before I fit it.

On top of the piston is engraved " mp A = -> "

... just wondering if the direction of the arrow is indicating the exhaust port or does it not matter? Can't see why it should but worthy checking.

Yes, it is bloody (sorry mods) important - it always points toward the exhaust port unless you buy hooky Chinese ones where it can point anywhere.

The ring ends and location pin should be toward the inlet (Carb side)

Get this wrong and you are very likely to snag a ring in the exhaust port:blushing::thumbdown:

Many thanks Spud.

Kinda figured it should but as it's a first time rebuild I'm seriously glad I asked.

Will get it all together in the morning with good light.

Hope this post might have helped a few others with similar problems now or in the future.

All the best

Jon

No worries - you live and learn - some in the cold as there saw is knackered and they can't cut firewood:lol::001_rolleyes:

Hope it goes well, so glad you asked:thumbup:
