Site plans for surveys

Hi Folks

What do you use to create site plans with tree locations? I'm fed up with drawing little squiggles on sketches or even scale maps transferred to Word. There must be a better way. I can get GPS co-ordinates and even plot these in Google Earth if I can be bothered but its such a faff. I must be missing something.

If I spend all my time being an artist, I'll never write a profitable survey.

Your thought please...

Cheers

A GPS data capture program such as Digiterra or Pocket GIS would make it simple. They come in at £750 and £500 respectively.

I have recently been looking at PT Mapper Pro from Pear Technology as well - looks pretty good and costs £775 I think. It will produce nice looking plans as image files, PDFs, AutoCAD files (DXF only) and you can also export the lot in to Google Earth.

I use mapinfo and if its work for the local council get the base map of them. Try looking on the council website as sometimes under the local development framework/ planning evidence they produce a mapping system for local residents.

On the website Leicestershire County charge £25 for 6 copies of an urban site based map 1:1250 scale map at the Librarys

AutoCAD can be very useful. Attached is the sort of look you can easily get. The trees on this plan were generated automatically by AutoCAD from data in a spreadsheet, and even inserted by AutoCAD. No third party software involved. We used this method to produce drawings of a 4000 tree site. Trees generated and inserted at the rate of 10 per second. Even shows shadow casts if required.
