Lot of movement from the rubber mounts on a Stihl ms260

Hi guys, new to the forum.

We've got an MS260 with an 18" bar, it's not even run in as my father doesn't like using it since he got it! The reason is that it's a little unpredictable! There seems to be way to much movement from in rubber mounts/suspension both laterally & horizontally! Is this normal? We've had many saws in the wood including Husky's and big old Stihl's that my father has always maintained himself but this one hasn't seemed right, from the start. He's taken it apart a couple of times to see if there's anything out of place or a washer missing but can't see anything obvious!

Is this saw renowned for a lot of movement?! Is it new health & safety tried to cut down on the amount of vibration getting to the operator?!!

Your opinions and hopefully experience will shed dome light on this.

Many thanks in advance.

have the 2 mounts on the clutch side of the saw got their bolts and plastic bungs in? Has the mount that connects the crank case to the handle (flywheel side) got its 3 bolts in? And its not split away from the metal plate.

Have replaced the mounts on one before and to be honest didn't notice much front eh old ones to the new ones.

When you push down on it the plastics at the top will touch each other and go back to there original position. They won't snap back into place just move back again.

If they have been taken apart a few times the rubber could have been worn by the crew tightening up.

You wil know when they are properly worn as the saw will flap about and knock.

Many thanks guys, sorry for the very late reply, I've been away.

Everything is fine inside, it must just be the new health & safety department gone mad! There's an awful amount of play in the bar & mount!

I suppose its just getting used to it!

Thanks again.

As a general rule over extended periods of time the rubber mounts deteriate from exposure to bar oil and become softened .

The suspension system is basically the same as any other Stihl being two annular buffers lower front handle ,one low right hand side rear and one high left hand side rear .About the only way you can be certain if the mounts are sound is to remove them and check them .They can often tear deep within where they can't be seen .

i have the same saw ms260 and did mention on one of my posts regarding the mounting movement compared to my ms250 now sold on etc and was worried about how soft it was etc but now accept it as normal i think it was down to a change of a better breed of saw etc i also checked out all my mounts and where not worn out or off center etc i,am made up i got one anyway there a good little saw designed to be used all day so dont worrie about it too much as mine is still soft n squidgy i ment the saw lol not what your dirty minds are thinkin

Hi guys.

This movement was from brand new so I don't think there would have been any degradation from oil exposure or the rubber having been ripped or torn.

I think it's just what my father finds different from his 20 odd year old pro Stihl and an equivalent Husky to this new breed of saw!!!

Thanks for your time, as I said, I think it's just Health n'safety stuff. Ya know, can't have too much vibration these days!!!
