Where they the saw of their day?

Not too sure about that!! More your steady, reliable everyday workhorse.

Bought mine new in 1992 with a 20" bar on it.

Worked it pretty hard as my "big" saw until it died on active service just over a year ago. Wondering if your 560 will still be fit for work after that long??:lol:

The supers were not produced in the numbers like the 038AV and 038 Mag .Fact I've only seen 2 or 3 supers in my life time .

Of this series the Magnum in it's varies forms was the most produced and still is highly prized by some incuding myself .Fact being either 380 or 381 is a later day model still produced or at least was in some portions of the world .

The 038 shares it's design with the 028-042 and 048 .It's maybe just a tiny bit heavier than the 044 that replaced it .You can still get parts for them and if reworked these things take modifications very well and are capable of delivering a lot of power for their size .

In addition they are very robust saws and with just normal maintainance last for a long time .I have a magnum in my shed that served faithfully for over 20 years of extreme service for a tree service company and it still runs as good as the day it was brand new .

In my opinion this was the best saw Stihl ever built .

Speculation on my part but evidently the 038 super must have been sold in greater numbers in GB than north America because as I've said I've only seen several in my life time .

Having only seen a few I've never worked on one and have no idea if it uses a hemi domed piston like an AV with an offset chamber .The Mag used a flat piston with a centered chamber .

You can find after market P and C's for a mag but I'm not so certain if for AV's and supers .The AV is 48,super 50 and Mag 52 mm bore .As far as I know just about all the other parts and pieces interchange
