when i saw your crown reduction john i was about to throw my saws off the pier, what a finish. now i know it was some fancy computer gizmo lol

very interesting reading, and almost everyones inputs were a joy to read.

Cheers buddy, I wish crown reduction was as easy as that in real life! :001_smile:

Photo shop can be a useful tool if a punter wishes to see how a tree might look after reduction. (Don't make it too neat though!!)

Great thread subject John! Only just seen this.

And what a fantastic tree. I would:

a) investigate further: how does it sound with a mallet? maybe a picus could be of use? or dare i say it, a thermal imaging assessment?

b) if decay is significant and the targets cannot be moved (ie re-route path) then the retrenchment pruning suggested by Dave would get my vote.

Interested to find out what happens in the real world...keep us posted.

I've heard enough and the lack of something interesting on the TV and nice bottle of Lugana wine have forced me to reply. Why is anyone talking about doing anything all we know is it has a fungus growing at the base. My plant path lecturer said something very important to me when I was a wee nipper of 19, don't open your mouth until you've had a good look.

It is an honest if embarrasing coincidence. Your posting han't appeared at the time just waiting for the missus to get back from the pub, my night to watch the kids. Nothing but rubbish on the box so thought I'd trawl the net. Saw the gubbins on this tree and got a bit narked. This is happening a great deal lately must be the looming depression of yet another birthday on the horizon.

On a more positive note there is going to be a great deal about what to do with old oak trees at the bash down at Windsor on the 5th Feb, I am talking briefly but if your fed up with me there is a good line up. Andrew Cowan has all the details. Well missus is back from the pub early so Good Night Ladies

did your lecturer come out of a cupboard smelling of alcohol before he had the courage to come out with those awesome pieces of advice.:confused1:
