New to Arbtalk - Stihl 009 Problem

Hi Guys - I'm a newbie so go gently please!

 

Does anyone have a Stihl 009 chainsaw? It was their smallest at the time and I use it often for small work. I damaged the guide and so bought a new one. When I went to fit it, there are two holes in the end of the guide - the bottom one takes the adjuster locating pin - what goes in the top one. There is a recess in the body of the saw as though there should be some sort of a pin but I don't have one and cannot remember there being one ever? Am I imagining that there was one? If I'm understanding you correctly the other hole in the guide bar is for when you flip the guide bar over... You are supposed to turn the bar every so often so it wears evenly. I turn it every time I sharpen it.

As stated. The bar can be turned upside down or either way up if you like. The top hole as you are seeing it is for when you turn the bar. Give it a try. It will all become clear.

Yep ive got a 009 and that second hole is when u flip the guide bar ova also there will be another hole for the oil to enter and travel around the guide bar. Great lil saw look after it bud

Thanks guys....good tip about turning it every time you sharpen the chain too. It is a great little saw - I also have a Stihl MS250 18" which is a swine to start and kicks back on the pull cord so I try to use the 009 every time!

 

I have been wanting to buy a Stihl long reach pole pruner for ages but they are just SO MUCH money. Are they as good as I think they are going to be? There must be a danger of chopped branches falling on you etc? Might try to hire one first!

My old chap has a Stihl pole pruner and he loves it, he uses the bloody thing for everything, he's pollarded some big old willows from the floor with it, using the full length of the bar, it's a wonder he's still around to be honest....!

 

You're right to be wary of the dangers, as you say, there is a risk that things fall on you. They should only be used for pruning small stuff for that very reason.

Rather than using the length of the pole to reach as high as you can vertically above your head, the reach should be used so that you can stand out of the potential drop zone of what you're cutting - maintaining the pole at 45 degrees is a reasonable basic starting point, depending of course on the size and spread of what you're cutting.

If the branch is so high that you're stood beneath it working above your head, you either need a longer pole or proper access equipment....

Urgh the stihl four mix pole saws are pants. There is many people who have had problems with the four mix engines. One has been sat on the bench for ages as I'm trying to figure out the running problems with it.

Not to my knowledge. Just throwing the four mix out there. But is there a decent two stroke that has the power of the four mix?? And power as in torque not speed?

I just had a look on the Stihl UK site and they have 3 pole pruners.... 2 4mix & 1 electric....

Or am I missing something.....
