Im looking to treat myself to a new book, either 'fungal strategies of wood decay in trees' or 'diagnosis and prognosis of the development of wood decay in urban trees'.

Who has read both? What are they key differences aside from price between the two?

Which would you choose and why?

Thank you...

They are both useful books and so I would say both.

Quite a lot of the later chapters of Diagnosis and Prognosis are available in some form as articles in the arb journal. Non of Fungal strategies is available, to my limited knowledge, anywhere else.

Fungal strategies is quite an academic book where as Diagnosis has more on application it is also more readable imo. As far as I know they are both out of print so if you can get either or both I would.

I don`t claim to be an expert by the way. Just my opinions.

I only have access to fungal strategies

There's not enough time to digest all these books in their entirety IMO.

Diversifying the reading material is a good strategy that I try to adhere to.

How much info does an arb require on the differing qualities of the various decay types on the layers of woody cells ?

Fungal strategies available at £40 for kindle on Amazon currently

I agree with Allin about the general differences. David is quite righat about digesting both; tall order. Fungal Strategies is more of a brain-burner; :confused1:read it 4 times during a graduate project 10 years ago and kinda understood most of it before reviewing it for the ISA journal.

Diagnosis is more accessible, and I use it a lot more for reports, recently checking I dryadeus mgt, for which it gave key info.

Which to get? depends on your objective. i love FSWDT :thumbup1: but i'd say for most arbs the big green book is worth the extra expense.
