I am in the process of removing several thousand fruit trees in an orchard. the brash will be burned, but the question is what is the best outlet for the trunkwood? the trunks are between 6-8 inch and about 6feet in length. My ideas are

1) market them for firewood

2) chip them for smoking ( need to know specifications)

3) sell to someone who has a use for apple wood in furniture making.

The wood has to be sold, to make the job viable for me.

How about a combination of 4 different purposes, if you chipped it all your stuck to one outlet:

1)Specialist smelly firewood

2)Geeky wood turners love the stuff I know a few who will buy it from you

3)Furniture making

4)Chip for smoking

I'm being a bit cheeky here so tell me to get lost. Just wondering why they had to be sold to make the job viable. I normally look on any money made from the firewood as an extra. Is this normal when you price a job, i.e if you know you'll get 200quid for the wood do you take 200quid off the price, or is it a one off to get the job.

As I said quite a cheeky question, but if you don't ask you don't learn. I'm still trying get the right balance when pricing jobs.

No problem mate, it is viable for me to do the job, its making it viable for the clients business to have me in to do the work. A case of scratching each others backs so's to speak. Its in my long term interest to help the client.

Try Working Woodlands Trust -c/o Ted Talbot Ecclesall Saw Mill Project, Sheffield (Meersbrook Park switchboard 0114 2500500) - might have good links to interested makers.

Andy, Don't fanny arse about with fancy stuff.

Stick it all at roadside with your quad and take advantage of the hire prices for firewood at the moment. There are people on here that will buy it or failing that call me and i'll give you some phone numbers.

Firewood will give you the best return versus time IMO. A nice lump sum for the client.
