New petrol lawn mower advice please

My experience - albeit based on one machine bought about 10/12 years ago - is that they have far too much plastic and fall to bits in next to no time. Definitely not up to serious work.

If they've changed since then or have a non-Airfix range running in parallel then apologies to them.

my etesia pro 46 is 12 years old... still in perfect condition and was used commercialy by a council for 8 years befor i got hold of it.. fantastic machines. its the only mower ive used that fills the box right to the brim wet or dry.

tcd sujested the viking 7 series which are also nice bits of kit.

Thanks to you all for your helpful replies and sorry for delay in posting (been away)

I really need to get a mower sorted. Borrowed a JCB petrol mower and it nearly killed me doing half the lawn. Absolutely useless.

@Daniel - I may be interested but you are a few hours away and i guess it depends on price and how to collect.

I will check out all the recommendations but doubt I will be spending enough to get an Etesia. Its only for personal use.

Just one quick question. How much does it cost to get a lawnmower serviced? Some machines have 5 or 7 year guarantees but you have to service them every year. If this is expensive then I you start to question wheter to go cheaper and just replace the machine more often.

Thanks again for every reply.

I am a dealer, so this opinion is biased, but I do feel that the success of the chosen mower is in part down to the dealer it is bought from.

Maybe rather than choose a mower, choose a dealer who is good and local. Ask his advice and buy from his product range. You will then have excellent support and spares backup.

Local dealer is tiny. Went to store last Saturday and it was closed from midday. I guess they rely on business customers mostly. Looked through window and they only had about 10 mowers.

I took my Efco in to see what it was worth as a PX & get a price for a service, I was quoted £70 including VAT for a service and a new blade. Seemed quite expensive to me but then I don't know how much the blade was....

Maybe it was the part that says if you are unsure where to post your thread put it here.
