Want to keep the peace neighbour wise, so looking for a reasonable electric chainsaw for logging. I know this topic has been done many many times, but cant see any mention of the model mentioned here.

Anyone have experience using the Makita UC4030A? I see lawson HIS doing it at a good price, but don't want to spend the dosh if it's not worth it.

I already have a petrol Stihl, but want to keep the peace and use it for larger sections only.

Yes, I have one. I use it when I am at home for firewood up to 12" and building work. I'm renovating my house at the moment and the thing copes with green oak and 2-300 year old beams with ease. I like the saw, particularly the lack of noise. I don't like that I have to remember about the (very generous) power cable or the fact that I can't use it when it is raining.

It starts on the button too... first time, every time.

I bought mine off eBay, unused in it's box, for £80. There was a long expired code for a free RCD plug on the box so when I registered the saw on the Makita website I entered the code on the off chance. The RCD arrived in the post two days later.

Thanks Hoggin, that's a helpful response. The model seems to come with a 400mm bar (16" in old money), so might give it a go. I see your comment about noise which is highly relevant to my reason for purchase. I'll have a look on flea bay too.

Cheers !

I forgot to say that it is really very well made and it also has a proper front handle so it is as easy to use with the bar horizontal as it is vertical. I checked the spares situation before I bought it and all parts seem to be available from normal Makita powertool service centres. I priced up a longer bar and it was quite reasonable, however, I found that the 13" bar is more than adequate for my needs.

Used my new Makita 4030 for the first today, but committed a cardinal sin: it ran out of oil and I was sawing away dry for some time ( no idea how long). I'm used to two stokes and top the oil every fill, or at least check it, but these damn electric ones don't run out of fuel do they! So forgot.

So can someone tell me what I should inspect, what damage should I be looking for?

Thanks

I bought a a second hand one & its still going strong but I had to buy a new oil pump though when it stopped oiling.

Local highstreet shop wanted to charge me £45 quid for it! :confused1:

But found it on ebay in the USA alot cheaper...

Shares alot of parts with dolmar saws as its the same company.

Maybe the original pump knacked up because im always forgetting to full the oil before it runs out? :001_rolleyes:

Ah, I see I'm not alone when it comes to forgetting the chain oil. I'm going to put a Dymo Label on it, "check the bloody oil".

Thanks for the info/ link Face Cord hope I don't need to for a while though :001_huh:
