In this case, and on ash (it ash, right?), in my experience it is always associated with decayed wood. Other times, this much dry, dusty frass, does come from dry decaying wood. However, it COULD come from feeding on living wood; ALB for example...

 

As a side note, I think your presence is needed regarding dryadeus on uktc! Also, did you get my email?
