Stihl 038av carb

I've got an old (but really nice condition) stihl 038av that I'm trying to get working. It doesn't idle or rev properly so I pressure tested the carb which revealed quiet a large air leak which I assume is the problem.

The saw is fitted with a Tillotson HK carb and the leak is around the plastic spacer that contains the metering setup. A quick google shows that apparently with age the plastic metering spacer can warp and cause an air leak.

So I guess the best thing to do is to fit a new carb, however it seems that they are quite hard to find for a reasonable price - a genuine replacement is around £80, which seems a lot! I've seen some aftermarket ones on ebay but are they any good and if they require a new carb kit are these available? If anyone could point me in the direction of a replacement carb or happens to have one that would be great!

Oh and I'm also looking for a double port exhaust for the saw as fitted to the bigger 038 Magnum if anyone has one knocking around....:thumbup1:

I have checked on this. The Tillotson carb is now obsolete according to my carb specialist. Neither can he supply the metering body.

Stihl list two Bing carbs, and a Zama, but no Tillotsons. The Zama retails at £106 plus vat.

Sorry this has not been much help.

These plastic components in carbs ar getting a hammering from the Ethanol content of current petrol, hence the swing away from plastic to aluminium.

I think £106 + VAT is out of the question, but thanks Gardenkit for taking the time to check for me!

I had a look on the US ebay and there do seem to be some good deals - however last time I ordered a few small parts from the US I was stung by customs and had to pay VAT, import duties and a handling charge

Mac, thanks for the offer! I'll PM you in a couple of weeks if I haven't sorted something out!
