Tony, about a year ago there was someone had some pines (I think it was pines) in a group that were suffering from an unknown canker. Unusually, it was causing failures. I can't find the thread anywhere and seem to remember you asking the OP if you could look into it further. If so, did you discover anything?

I know the one you mean too, tried to find it myself because I did find out what it was after rooting about, I cant remember it now off hand but certainly could work it again if found. I seem to remeber finding a reference maybe the book you have right now! butin of one that is known to cause failures, a rarity amoung cankers as you know!

 

Whats your interests? researching it by chance?

No interest other than curiosity really. I shall have a nose in Butin if I get a chance tomorrow. Haven't read through it yet, only had a brief scan through. It all looks fascinating

An interesting read through past post.

 

Is their any hard evidence (apart from maybe the cross section in the photo) as to the structural significance of these cankers?

 

As I read it their is no real documentation as to the detrimental effect on failure of structural integrity thus far. Did i read right or am I just having a blond moment on an otherwise interesting subject?
